Iliya Beshkov (1901 - 1958) is among the most significant, original and profound figures in Bulgarian culture of the 20th century. A graphic artist, caricaturist, illustrator, publicist and professor at the Academy of Arts, he remains in history not simply as a master of the image, but as a philosopher of the Bulgarian soul. For Beshkov, drawing is a quick, precise and virtuoso stroke. With a few strokes of the pen, he manages to convey an entire character, emotion and social drama. His caricatures and drawings are never just funny or caustic. They are a deep psychological portrait of society. Beshkov ridicules political hypocrisy and stupidity, but always retains deep empathy and sympathy for the “little”, suffering person. He knows the mentality, way of life and psychology of the Bulgarian to perfection – both from the village and the city salon, capturing with absolute authenticity their joys, vices and conflicts. Beshkov was also an exceptional thinker and orator. His notes, essays, and reflections on art (collected in books such as The Black Notebook) reveal a man of high moral qualities, for whom creativity is a supreme act of conscience and the search for truth. As a teacher, he educated generations of artists in freedom of spirit and respect for the craft.
